I’ve been reading Raising a Modern Day Joseph by Larry Fowler. In it he describes how most Christian young people have absolutely no clue as to what the Bible teaches. And I’m talking about basic things like not knowing that the Christmas story is in Matthew.
But, I’m not here to point fingers at anyone except at myself. What I find to be my problem is the misconception that I have a lot of time to teach the Bible to my children, when in reality, I don’t.
Let’s just say I knew I had only one year left to hold a Bible in my hands. What would I do? Would I think a year is a long time, so I’ll get to teaching the Bible to my children eventually? The answer would be a resounding “no”, but I would make a plan to put as much Bible into my children as I possible could.
I don’t really know how much time I have left, so I’d better get busy. There truly is an urgency to do this, because the time is short. It gets shorter and shorter every day (or so it feels ).
Here’s my plan:
The doctrine of Jesus Christ’s deity is in my opinion the most important one. You can believe all you want to about the Father or any other doctrine in the Bible, but if you miss it on this one, then your soul and the souls of your children are in danger. This is the doctrine that Satan attacks with all he’s got and if we don’t arm our children with the verses that teach this doctrine, we are essentially sending them out into the world to be deceived.
So how am I going to teach it to my children? I have compiled quite a few verses which teach on the subject, both in the Old and in the New Testaments. Each week we are going to memorize one verse and if we happen to memorize it sooner than a week, we’ll move on to the next verse before the week is out.
Is this all I’m going to do? No. We’re also going to memorize the verses which give us the different names of Jesus. I want to saturate our souls with the Scriptures, because I need all the ammunition I can get against the devil.
Having said this, I am thrilled to share some exciting news! On Monday, I will have a downloadable item available on this blog which will help you in teaching this doctrine to your children and in studying it for yourself. You’ll want to come back and check it out.
So what is your plan of action? How are you memorizing the Bible with the kiddos? Please stop by and share. If we band together and help each other, we gain strength in our spiritual battles.
